Do I need a custom rod?
Yes and no. Anglers who will benefit the most from a custom rod are anglers who fish very often , or fish for tackle busting fish, like Tuna, or Marlin. There are several companies that make quality factory rods. We stock Calstar Rods for anglers who do not need or want a custom rod.
How do I get you to build me a custom rod?
First you need to come into our shop with an idea of "what", "how" and "where" you will be fishing. The more information I have the easier it will be for us to build you the correct rod. Trying to build a custom rod over the phone from is very difficult.
How much does a custom rod cost?
There is no set price. The cost of a rod will vary from rod to rod. There are many variables in a custom rod such as guides, reel seats and decorative wraps. Each rod is unique and each one can have a different price. A ballpark price for a basic live bait rod is $ 180.00. A custom fitted tuna rod will start around $275.00.
We have been building custom rods for over 20 years. During that time we have accumulated a wealth of knowledge on rod building. When you purchase a custom rod from "Ono" you are not only paying for rod components, quality workmanship but priceless long range fishing experience. If you feel our price is too expensive then you should consider another custom rod builder.
How long does it take to have a custom rod made?
It depends on how busy we are. Usually the wait is about 4 to 8 weeks, longer if we are swamped with orders.
Can you make me a rod that is good for everything?
No. If I could I would be a rich man. To get the utmost from a custom rod it should be designed for a single use. Example: stand-up tuna fishing, or marlin live bait casting. There are rods that can be used for a couple of different fishing styles but no rod is good for several different things.
Which is a good blank for 20 lb. or 30 lb or 40 lb. or 50 lb. or 80 lb. or live bait or jig tossing or trolling?

Do you sell rod building components?
Yes, we sell Calstar Blanks and Hypalon as well as Fuji, Aftco and Perfection Guides and Reel Seats.
Do you have guide spacing for my rod blank?
If you purchased the blank from Ono Custom Rods, we will be glad to give you a guide spacing. If not, sorry. Anyone that you purchase a rod blank from should be able to give you this information when you buy the blank.
Do you have any surf rods? (Usually asked from May to August)
No.
What colors look good?
Colors are a personal choice. What looks good to you may look "ugly" to someone else. We have many colors to pick from "regular" thread to "metallic" thread. Most rods are double or triple wrapped, so the combinations are infinite.
Do you do repairs?
Yes. We can replace broken or worn guides. We can not fix broken blanks or replace missing rod sections.
Can you just do the labor?
We can, but usually do not. If you have purchased the components from our store and decided not to build the rod yourself, we will gladly build the rod for you. If the components are purchased elsewhere, it will depend on how busy we are. Our main concern is to serve our loyal customers who have supported us over the years.
